For years I tried to find my biological roots. I could never get anywhere because every lawyer I went to told me that in Oklahoma that was impossible. After going to a different lawyer every 3-4 years and being told that, I was about to give up when a friend told me I wasn’t getting any younger and I should look into this again since I was having some health issues.
I had just gotten internet and looked up some things on it and found there was a Reunion Registry in Oklahoma. I contacted them and they told me I was not a DHS adoption so I should continue this thru the county in which I was adopted. I called a friend and she recommended a lawyer to contact. That lawyer did not get back to me and I called again in about a month. I was told by the lady on the phone to contact the court clerk and there was a form to fill out. I called the court clerk on a Fri. afternoon about 4 PM. She told me she could take my information over the phone and she would show it to the Judge and call back in about 10 min. and she would have an answer. I thought Yeah right. But I called back in about 20 Min. and she had my information. She offered to mail me a copy of my petition and also read it to me over the phone. WOW in less that 30 min. I had what I had been searching for for 30 years.
Then began the hard part. To locate these people. It was funny cause she told me that I had a sibling. I had never thought about siblings so that made the search more interesting. At that time you could get white pages without charge so I started looking up family names to see if I could find this name but got nowhere. Then I looked up genealogy pages and contacted some of them to see if they knew any of the names I had. A lady contacted me back and said she found a possible match on the SS Death Index. I found out where my Dad had passed away and contacted a local paper for an obit. WOW again. I had several siblings and several Aunts and 1 Uncle living in the State not over 60 miles from me. I contacted the Uncle and he told me which sister to contact for genealogy information. It took a while for me to contact her as she was camping at the lake for the summer. But I finally left a message and ask her to return a call about genealogy as I did not want to leave a message about what I was really calling about. She called me back a couple days later and I told her why I was calling. She was so sweet and very helpful and filled me in on my Dad’s family. I was trying to track down some of my Mom’s family and as it happened Mom’s husband and her husband were distant cousins so she helped me track down my Mom’s side of the family too. page 2
